Module 1
Professional pilot license course
This training program of ATO Rattan is aimed at students who start training
from the beginning to obtain a license CPL (A) with qualification IR, MEP-L, MEP-L / IR or called.
ATPL (Frozen).
Training takes place in modules and includes ground training, theoretical and flight programs.
All programs are developed according to the requirements of EASA and PART-FCL.
Requirements for the candidates:
- Minimum age - 18 years.
- Documents that an applicant should provide: copies of diploma education / secondary or tertiary / ID card/ certificate of medical fitness Class 1 - certificate should be issued by another CAMO or European specialized medical center.
- Appropriate knowledge of English
PPL (A) - Training program for amateur pilots.
PPL Theoretical Course
Theoretical knowledge instruction is provided by the following approved training organizations (ATOs):

At the end of the theoretical training an applicant for a PPL shall demonstrate a level of knowledge appropriate to the privileges granted in
9 subjects. Applications for theoretical knowledge examinations shall be submitted to the BG-CAA only when the applicant is recommended by the ATO responsible for their training.
Exam sessions, known as sittings, are organized monthly by the BG-CAA and take place at the BG-CAA main building at Sofia International Airport.
The entire set of 9 theoretical knowledge exams shall be taken before the completion of flight training.
PPL Training Program Contents:
- Safety instructions, safety structure of ATO RATAN, rules and regulations.
- Detailed study of the aircraft AFM.
- Introduction to the flight training program and flight documentation.
- Familiarization with Dolna Banya aerodrome, local area landmarks, traffic circuit, restricted and training areas.
- Flight training – 45:15 flying hours on Tecnam P92JS airplanes.
To achieve adequate level of knowledge students are provided with all necessary maps, charts and manuals including detailed description of the flight training exercises.
Flight Training Program Contents:
- Preliminary and preflight preparation.
- Flight training with flight instructor.
- Flight experience as pilot in command.
- VFR cross-country flights.
- Instrument flight training.
Before every training flight a qualified flight instructor performs a preflight briefing and checks the student's level of knowledge and flight readiness.
After the flight the flight instructor debriefs the flight, analyzes the student’s progress and gives training assignments for the next flight exercise.
After successful completion of the flight training program the applicant shall demonstrate through the completion of a skill test the ability to perform, as PIC on the appropriate aircraft category, the relevant procedures and maneuvers with competency appropriate to the privileges granted. The applicant shall demonstrate acceptable level of knowledge and flight skill for take-off, landing, cross-country VFR flight and radio communication skills before a BG CAA qualified flight examiner (FE).
The privileges of the holder of a PPL (A) license with SEP (Land) rating are to act as pilot in command (PIC) or co-pilot on the specified class of aircraft engaging in noncommercial operations.
A PPL (A) license is valid for two years. The license can be revalidated after a check flight with a BG CAA qualified examiner. If the license is not revalidated before the expiration date, it may be renewed after a renewal flight training consisting of 3 hours and 30 minutes of flight instruction and 1 hour and 30 minutes of skill test before a BG CAA qualified flight examiner (FE) according Part FCL.
Theoretical courseATPL
A PPL(A) holder who wants to obtain an ATPL has to take a theoretical course at one of the following approved training organizations:

The study takes approximately 6 months.
At the end of the courseapplicants for an ATPL shall demonstrate a level of knowledge appropriate to the privileges granted in 14 subjects. Applications for theoretical knowledge examinations shall be submitted to the BG-CAA. Exam sittings take place monthly at the BG-CAA main building at Sofia International Airport. The entire set of 14 theoretical knowledge exams shall be taken before the date of the CPL/IR flight check.

Flight Time Building
Minimum Flight Time Requirements:
- To enter moduleCPL (A) - 150 flying hours.
- To enter module IR(SEA) - 50 flying hours as PIC.
- To fulfill the above requirements candidates for CPL(A) of ATO”RATAN” should have 85:00 flying hours as PIC to be eligible for continuation of the flight training in the next modules.
A PPL (A) license holder may choose to do his flight time buildup at the same time with the theoretical course ATPL to become eligible for CPL training programs.
АТО RATANoffers its trainees the possibility to hire an airplane (with a safety pilot on board) and perform flights as pilot in command according the applicable flight safety requirements. The flight time is logged and the personal log book is presented to the training manager for validation.
Module 2
VFRNight
The program includes:
- 08:00 h of theoretical training on the specifics of night flying.
- 05:50 h of flight training at an airport equipped for night flights.
Plovdiv Airport and Gorna Oryahovitsa Airport are typically used for VFR Night flight training.
Module 3
IR (A) - Program for IFR instrument flights in single engine plane.
IR(SEA) – Single Engine IFR Flight training program.
To enter Module 3 the applicant shall have successfully completed the ATPL theoretical course.
The program consists of:
- 10:00 h of ground training for IFR familiarization.
- 50:20 h of flight training with an Instrument Rating Instructor on P2008JC / P2002JR airplanes equipped for IFR flights.
The course is based on 2 modules:
- Basic module IFR.
- Procedural module IFR.
Every applicant receives a copy the flight training program and detailed description of all exercises.
Before every training flight a qualified flight instructor performs a preflight briefing and checks the student's level of knowledge and flight readiness.
After the flight the flight instructor debriefs the flight, analyzes the student’s progress and gives training assignments for the next flight exercise.
After successful completion of the flight training program the applicant shall demonstrate through the completion of a skill test the ability to perform the relevant procedures and maneuvers with a degree of competency appropriate to the privileges granted. The skill test is taken before a BG CAA qualified flight examiner (FE) and lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes. The applicant shall demonstrate self-confidence and acceptable level of knowledge and skill to perform IFR flights to and from an international airport including radio communication skills.
An IR (SEA) shall be valid for 1 year. It shall be revalidated within the 3 months immediately preceding the expiry date of the rating. If an IR has expired, in order to renew their privileges applicants shall pass a refresher theoretical training of 03:30h at an ATO, before completing a 01:30 h proficiency check in accordance with Appendix 9 to Part FCL.
Module 4
MEP (Land) - Flight training program for multiengine single pilot airplaneThe program includes:
- Ground training describing the specifics of flights on multiengine aircraft and the P2006T airplane.
- The flight training program is 06:30h. Every applicant receives a copy the flight training program and detailed description of all exercises. Before every training flight a qualified flight instructor performs a preflight briefing and checks the student's level of knowledge and flight readiness. After the flight the flight instructor debriefs the flight, analyzes the student’s progress and gives training assignments for the next flight exercise.
MEP (Land) shall be validated every year with a 01:30h flight check before a BG CAA qualified examiner.
If a MEP(Land) has expired, in order to renew their privileges applicants shall pass an integrated flight program and flight check according Part FCL.
Module 5
CPL(A) - Flight training program
The flight training program is 16:40h with a flight instructor on P92JS / P2008JC / P2006T airplanes.
Every applicant receives a copy the flight training program and detailed description of all exercises. Before every training flight a qualified flight instructor performs a preflight briefing and checks the student's level of knowledge and flight readiness. After the flight the flight instructor debriefs the flight, analyzes the student’s progress and gives training assignments for the next flight exercise.
After successful completion of the flight training program the applicant shall demonstrate through the completion of a skill test the ability to perform the relevant procedures and maneuvers with a degree of competency appropriate to the privileges granted. The skill test is taken before a BG CAA qualified flight examiner (FE) and lasts 02:00h.
Module 6
IR (MEA) - Flight training course for pilots with IR(SEA) who apply to obtain IR(MEA)
The flight training program is 05:00h on a multiengine airplane.
Every applicant receives a copy the flight training program and detailed description of all exercises. Before every training flight a qualified flight instructor performs a preflight briefing and checks the student's level of knowledge and flight readiness. After the flight the flight instructor debriefs the flight, analyzes the student’s progress and gives training assignments for the next flight exercise.
After successful completion of the flight training program the applicant shall demonstrate through the completion of a skill test the ability to perform the relevant procedures and maneuvers with a degree of competency appropriate to the privileges granted. The skill test is taken before a BG CAA qualified flight examiner (FE) and lasts01:30h under supervision of the “BG CAA” examiner. The applicant shall demonstrate self-confidence and acceptable level of knowledge and skill to perform IFR flights to and from an international airport including radio communication skills.
IR (MEA) shall be validated every year with a 01:30h flight check before a BG CAA qualified examiner. If an IR (MEA) has expired, in order to renew their privileges applicants shall pass a refresher theoretical training of 03:30h at an ATO, before completing a 01:30h proficiency check.
